Join us this Friday, May 12 for our members meeting! Our guest speaker for the evening is acclaimed author Alan Dyer and he will be presenting “How to Photograph and Still Enjoy the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse“.

With the Great North American Eclipse coming to Canada on April 8, 2024, now is the time to start preparing for the big day. Alan presents his tips and techniques for viewing and photographing the solar eclipse, using methods that best ensure success and still allow you to see and enjoy the eclipse! 

Join us this Friday, April 15 for our members meeting! Our guest speaker for the evening is our very own Matthew Mannering, and his topic for the evening will be “How to Maintain your Astro-gear”

Matthew will be offering advice on regular and not-so-regular maintenance of your equipment. Speaking about telescope maintenance, he may touch upon cleaning optics, collimation of scopes, and all kinds of suggestions to keep your equipment running smoothly… Bring your notepads for this one!!

Join us this Friday, March 10 for our members meeting! Our guest speaker for the evening is Kerry-Ann Lecky Hepburn and her topic for the evening will be “Night Sky Photography Under Adverse Conditions“.

As astrophotographers, we dream of clear and transparent skies with no light pollution, but in reality, we oftentimes don’t get that. However, instead of seeing poor conditions as a hindrance, we can learn to work with them in unique ways that may still result in producing some great astro images. In this presentation, I will share some examples of how I worked with these subpar conditions to produce some of my favourite images.

Join us this Friday, February 10 for our members meeting! Our guest speaker for the evening is Dr. Laura Parker and her topic for the evening will be “Galaxy Evolution in Groups and Clusters“.

Dr. Parker is a long-time friend of the HAA and has spoken to us on occasion. She is a Professor and University scholar in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at McMaster University. She joined the faculty at McMaster in 2007 after an ESO fellowship in Germany and received her PhD from the University of Waterloo in 2005. Before that she attended Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick and Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in Victoria, B.C.

Join us this Friday, January 13  for our first members meeting of the new year! Our guest speaker will be John Gauvreau. His topic for the evening will be The Elephant in the Room – The Nature of our Sun and Observing a Star Up Close.

From its fiery heart where all our light and heat originates, to its tenuous outer atmosphere seen during an eclipse, our Sun gives us a remarkable opportunity to study a star up close. While we all strive to see the faintest starlight from distant galaxies, let’s spend an evening studying the often overlooked elephant in the room; a star right on our doorstep!
